Mexico

Mexico is a diverse country with impressive landscapes. Stretching from North to Central America, it borders the USA, Guatemala and Belize.

Its geography includes mountain ranges such as the Sierra Madre, long coastlines along the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, as well as peninsulas like Baja California in the northwest and Yucatán in the southeast. Tropical rainforests (Chiapas in the south) and deserts in the north, active volcanoes and the country’s highest peak, Pico de Orizaba, shape the landscape. Numerous lakes, rivers and waterfalls contribute to Mexico’s rich biodiversity.

Good to know

Mexico combines Maya and Aztec heritage, colonial history, tropical coastlines, highland volcanoes and vibrant cities. Ideal for round trips and beach holidays, the country’s regional climate diversity makes it an attractive year-round destination.

Flight connections

There are direct flights to Mexico City and Cancún from Europe, as well as from numerous cities in the USA and Canada.

Tourists from the EU, Switzerland or the USA do not require a visa for stays of up to 180 days. A passport and a return or onward ticket are sufficient. A tourist card (FMM) must be completed online. Check validity and details with official embassies.

November to April is the best travel period: dry, warm and ideal for round trips or beach holidays. May to October is the rainy season, with higher humidity and hurricane risk (especially on the Caribbean coast). Highland regions remain mild year-round.

Tourist areas are generally considered safe, but Mexico has higher crime rates overall. Be alert to petty crime in cities and avoid high-risk regions (border areas and parts of the north). Follow official travel advisories.

No mandatory vaccinations; standard vaccinations and hepatitis A are recommended. Mosquito protection is important (dengue, Zika, some malaria risk). Avoid drinking tap water. For up-to-date health advice, consult HealthyTravel or a tropical medicine institute.
