Whale Season on the Valdés Peninsula

From June to early December, it’s whale season along Patagonia’s coast – and a visit to Valdés Peninsula is especially worthwhile during these months. Maruja Seithe from Latventure Argentina/Chile shares her tips!

Many southern right whales come close to the coast to take advantage of the gulf’s ideal climatic conditions for breeding. In addition to whales, the region offers rich flora and fauna – and at the right time you may also spot penguins, sea lions, elephant seals, and with a bit of luck even orcas.

Valdés Peninsula can be visited on a day trip from Puerto Madryn, ideally combined with a whale-watching boat tour. This allows you to observe up close how these enormous animals glide elegantly through the water and sometimes even approach the boat out of curiosity.

For those with more time, we recommend staying in the small village of Puerto Pirámides, located at the entrance to the peninsula and an ideal base for excursions. From the beach you can enjoy beautiful views over Golfo Nuevo, where you may watch whales surface to breathe, lift their flukes above the water, or leap powerfully into the air. If weather conditions allow, kayaking excursions are possible – a truly special way to explore the stunning surroundings. You can also venture beyond the village and discover the remote natural landscape on guided trekking and mountain-bike tours, or more leisurely on horseback.

A particularly special and exclusive experience is a stay at Estancia Rincón Chico, located directly on the peninsula. Far away from tourists, you can fully absorb the magic of this place. Come and experience the enchantment of Patagonia’s coast for yourself! For any questions, please contact Maruja Seithe:
